Thomas F. “Tom” Lyerla, 76, of Marine, IL, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026, at home, surrounded by his family.
He was born on October 1, 1949, in Highland, IL, to James Richard and Mary Ellen (nee Gillespie) Lyerla Sr. On April 22, 1977, Tom married the love of his life, Cheryl “Cheri” Ahlmeyer, in Marine, IL.
Tom Lyerla was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, coworker, and neighbor whose greatest accomplishment was the family he loved so deeply. He shared 49 years of marriage with his wife, Cheri, and together they built a life they loved, raising three daughters and creating a family that was always the center of his world. Tom dedicated 37 years to The Korte Company, where his hard work, loyalty, knowledge, and craftsmanship left a lasting mark on countless projects. His dedication extended to his community through eight years of service on the Triad Community Unit School District Board of Education, as a member of Marine United Church of Christ, and through his involvement with the Marine Lions Club. Like his brothers, Tom was a member of DeMolay, a junior Masonic organization, where he obtained its highest honors. Known for his kind and gentle heart, steady presence, and willingness to help anyone in need, Tom made those around him feel safe, loved, and cared for. His love for his family, service to his community, the life he built, and the example he set will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Ellen Lyerla Sr.; brothers, Terry “Woody” Lyerla and Jon Lyerla.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Cheri Lyerla, Marine, IL; daughters, Courtney (Rich) Branson, Highland, IL, Dena (Kenny) Hime, Highland, IL, and Jenny Cook, Highland, IL; grandchildren, Trey Branson, Reid Branson, Hattie Branson, Madison Hime, Macey Hime, Ellen Seger, Peyton Seger, and Charlotte Seger; brother, James Richard “Jim” Lyerla Jr.; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
