Shirley J. Haner

d. May 14, 2024

Shirley J. Haner, 89, of Collinsville, IL, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at La Bella Nursing Home in Edwardsville, IL.

She was born on December 26, 1934, in Cape Girardeau, MO, to Leon and Hulda (nee Heider) Garner. On March 26, 1954, she married the love of her life, William “Bill” John Haner in St. Louis, MO.

Shirley loved to cook, while her husband worked his magic on the barbecue grill, Shirley’s cooking stole the show, adding a dash of joy and flavor in her mostaccioli to every family gathering. The best part was seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces as they enjoyed her creations. Aside from her knack in the kitchen, Shirley was a talented and devoted hairdresser, pouring her heart and soul into her work with flair and finesse. Operating a thriving studio from her home for the better part of her life, Shirley didn't just give her clients stylish haircuts; she also filled their hearts with warmth through her genuine care and contagious laughter.

In her leisure time, Shirley found solace in the simple pleasures of life. Whether she was perusing her favorite shops for treasures, spending quality time with her cherished family, or cuddling up with her beloved poodles, Shirley's zest for life was evident in every moment she savored. But perhaps Shirley's most enduring legacy lies in her boundless kindness and selflessness. She possessed a heart of gold and would go to great lengths to help those in need, embodying compassion and generosity in all she did. She was a treasured wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, William “Bill” J. Haner; parents, Leon and Hulda Garner; siblings, Robert (Bernice) Garner, Judy (John) Fleeman, Lenora (Lou) Getz, Caroline (Calvin) Pitts, Geraldine “Gerry” (Larry) Pugh.

Shirley is survived by her son, William “Bill” S. (Lisa Fuehner) Haner; grandchildren, Mackenzie J. Haner, Lilly Fuehner, Annie Stanek; siblings, William “Andy” (Karen) Garner, Arlene, (Paul) Schoate; nieces, nephews, and many loving friends.
