Marion Levi Harmon, 86, of Centralia, IL passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, IL.
Marion was born July 15, 1939, to Virgil and Doris (Bradley) Harmon in Johnsonville, IL. He married Gail Fair on June 24, 1960, in Salem, IL, who preceded him in death.
After graduating from Salem High School, Marion served in the United States Army. Post-military, he started his career at Murray Center in Centralia and then went on to teach special education at Raccoon Grade School in Centralia. Marion was proud to have achieved his master’s degree in education administration by doing night school at SIUE.
Marion lived to serve and improve the lives of others. As an Elder at the Community of Christ church in Centralia, IL, he spread his faith by ministering and helping others. An American Red Cross volunteer, Marion served in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and in New York City after 9/11, among other disasters. He was also active in the Boy Scouts and served as assistant Scout Master.
Without a doubt, Brush Creek Campground was Marion’s favorite place in the world. He always said he would never have become the person he was without it. He organized Brush Creek’s first junior camp and served as its director for fifteen years. He also volunteered at church camps around the country, helping to mold young children just as he once was.
In his leisure time, Marion enjoyed perusing yard sales, metal detecting, playing cards with friends, square dancing, and traveling in his RV with his wife. As well as visiting all fifty US states, he was also a member of the Raccoon Ramblers Camping Club in Centralia, where he made countless life-long friends. Every winter, Marion would winter in Park Place RV Resort in Harlingen TX, where he loved to woodwork and watch the Texas sunsets.
Marion was an amazing man who loved to spend time with his grandchildren and who always made time for his family. He never missed a family event. With his wife, Marion would look after his grandkids one weekend every month, as well as take them to Branson one week every summer.
A larger-than-life living legend, Marion was known for his off-the-wall sense of humor and good-natured pranks. He touched every single person who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Marion is survived by his children Tom (Liz) Harmon of Naples, FL, Stephanie (Jon) Logullo of Greenville, IL; siblings Glennis Harmon, Kell, IL, Catherine (Al) Ramirez, Bonner Springs, KS, Mayola (Neil) Friend, Garden City, MO, Avanelle Mercer, Otto Orchards, WA, Gayla Faye (Ross) Fitjorold, Xenia, IL; four grandchildren Alex (Katie) Harmon, Tad (Jenny) Logullo, Drew (Mary) Logullo, Ben Logullo; two great grandchildren Avery Harmon and Ferris Marion Logullo; and several nieces and nephews.
