John W. Wissel

John William Wissel, 86, of Albion, Illinois, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

John was born on November 4, 1939, to Englebert George and Coraline (Summers) Wissel. He married the love of his life, Avalea Chapman, on July 6, 1958, and together they shared more than 67 wonderful years of marriage. He never missed a chance to tell her, and everyone else, she was the prettiest girl there ever was.

John was a member of West Village Christian Church. He was also an active member of the Edwards County Sportsmen Club, the Classic Car Club, and the International Union of Operating Engineers. After becoming empty nesters, John and Avalea discovered a shared passion for antique cars, proudly showing them at car shows and winning many trophies along the way. An avid deer and coon hunter, he was also a member of the Tri-County Coon Club.

John worked for Wabash Asphalt for 28 years as a construction superintendent, where he was highly respected and formed many lasting friendships.

John was known for his warm smile and contagious laugh. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who deeply loved his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Avalea; his children, Stephen (Judy) Wissel, Lori (Dennis) Splittorff, Tony (Gina) Wissel, and Tonya (Curt) Bratsch; nine grandchildren, Joseph, Addison, Evan, Rachel, Faith, Kelcy, Christian, Brenden, and Callie; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Fred Wissel, as well as several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Dennis Splittorff.

Visitation for John Wissel will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Ingram Meridith Funeral Home in Albion, Illinois. Funeral Services will follow at 12:00 noon, also at Ingram Meridith Funeral Home, Albion, IL. Graveside services will follow at West Village Cemetery, north of Albion, Illinois.
