John R. Broadhurst, Jr.

John Richards Broadhurst, Jr., 75, of Highland, IL, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at home, surrounded by his family.

Dear Family and Friends,

It is with deep respect and love that we share the life and legacy of John Richards Broadhurst, Jr.

Born in Dalhart, Texas, on June 3, 1950, to John R. and Henriette (nee Wingate) Broadhurst, Sr., John spent his early years in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Salt Lake City, Utah. It was in Utah that he developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at just 12 years old. After graduating from Scottsdale High School and attending a year of military school, John enlisted in the United States Army.

John’s military service was marked by extraordinary dedication and bravery. He served 34 months in Vietnam over two tours, earning the Combat Infantryman's Badge, a Silver Star, and a Bronze Star for his gallantry in combat. His distinguished twenty-year career included assignments at Ft. Bliss, Ft. Gordon, Ft. Bragg, Ft. Sill, Ft. Riley as well as several years as a combat instructor in Germany.

While stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas, John met his wife, Kate. They were married on July 27, 1987, and continued their service together in Germany before John retired from the Army in 1989. The family later moved to Michigan and eventually settled in Highland, Illinois. In 1992, they welcomed their son, Jacob.

In retirement, John became a prominent figure in the Cowboy Action Shooting community under the alias "Hassayampa John Mossman." He was instrumental in establishing the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) at the Highland Pistol-Rifle Club and was honored as a SASS Regulator and a Jedi Gunfighter. John lived by the creed: "Ride Hard, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth." He remained a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, the NRA (National Rifle Association), the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), and SASS (Single Action Shooting Society).

John was a devoted family man, a decorated veteran, and a mentor to many. We are immensely proud of his legacy. To his son Jacob, his daughter-in-law Tori, and his granddaughter Bowen: his love and guidance will remain with you always.

John is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Kate” (nee Haislar) Broadhurst; son, Jacob William (Victoria “Tori”) Broadhurst; granddaughter, Bowen Kathryn Broadhurst; cousins, Mary Dorothy, Toby, Darla, Bill Rhea, Mary Frances, Joyce, Linda, Mary Jane, and John.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), the Highland American Legion Post #439, or to HSHS Hospice.

Celebration of Life Gathering: Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, at the VFW Post 5694 in Highland, IL, with Military Honors at 2:00 pm
