James G. “Jim” Haberer, 63, of Highland, IL, passed away Friday, June 5, 2026, at Barnes Jewish Hospital, in the Cardiac Care Unit, with his family by his side.

He was born Jan. 11, 1963, to Maurice and Sally (nee Schrumpf) Haberer, in Highland, IL. On October 7, 1988, he married Mary Wick at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Highland, IL.

Jim was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1580, Meals on Wheels driver, and past Chairman of Kirchenfest 1998.

He loved to travel with his family; he and Mary visited all 50 states, many with their boys. He enjoyed boating and being on the water at the Lake of the Ozarks, taking their kids and friends tubbing and wakeboarding. He made sure they were involved in sports from a very young age to build character, discipline and to make friends. He was an active parent, never missing a game a meet. He took an active role in their education and worked hard to help them succeed. When it came time to vacation, he loved any place with a beach but especially the white sands of Florida. He rented travel campers for long family trips but only if it was a deal. He loved a good bargain and made sure to get the best one by researching everything. Except when it came to his grandchildren when the budget went out the window. He truly cherished his grandchildren and couldn’t wait to watch the next video of them playing or talking to him while he was in the hospital and had previously spent many hours visiting and spoiling them with ice cream. As a health insurance broker for over 30 years, Jim dedicated his work life to his many customers, making sure that not only were they protected but listened to when they needed help or just wanted to talk, with many becoming good friends. He had a love of collecting Budweiser and St. Louis Cardinals memorabilia. He loved his fur baby, “Nilla”, a yellow lab. He was always willing to share the couch with his sweet girl or throw her a ball.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Sally Haberer; grandparents, Harry and Sophia Haberer, John and Kathleen “Kate” Schrumpf.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Haberer, Highland, IL; sons, Luke (Anna) Haberer, Castle Rock, CO, Alec (Elizabeth) Haberer, St. Charles, MO, Josh Haberer, Marine, IL; grandchildren, Dakota and Colby Haberer, Nora Haberer; brothers and sisters, Michael (Nancy) Haberer, Pocahontas, IL, Terry (Damon) Lucas, Edwardsville, IL, Bradley (Mona) Haberer, Edwardsville, IL, Randy (Becky) Haberer, Pocahontas, IL; many nieces and nephews; fur baby, Nilla.

Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
