Doris M. Luber of Highland, IL, died Saturday, November 1, 2025. She was 97 years of age.
Doris and her identical twin sister, Dorothy, were the daughters of Oscar and Leona Hoffman of Highland, IL. Dorothy preceded her in death in 2015. Doris was a 1946 graduate of Saint Paul High School and married Walter J. Luber in 1951.
Doris Luber is survived by three children, Charles, of Trenton, IL, Mary (Danny) Gross of Highland, IL, and Timothy (Tracy) of Flower Mound, TX. She had three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her sister Dorothy is survived by two children, John Boyd and Elizabeth (Paul) Conner.
She was employed first by the Farmers and Merchants Bank and later, by the First National Bank of Highland, retiring in 1994. She rose to the position of Assistant Vice-President and specialized in student loans, advising many high school students and their parents regarding their college selection and the loan program. At one time under her stewardship the First National Bank had the second highest number of student loans of any bank in Illinois.
Doris was a renowned seamstress, sewing and doing alterations for many people in Highland and the surrounding area. During the early months of the COVID epidemic she made and helped distribute over 1,300 masks.
She was an avid gardener but managed to take an occasional break to watch Cardinals baseball games and classic movies.
Doris enjoyed dancing and played the saxophone in Joe Ladd’s Orchestra. She sang in the Saint Paul Church Choir and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.
As her life progressed, Doris was frequently asked by younger women, “How do you do it?”. Her answer was “Keep moving, have a purpose when you get up in the morning and keep your mind active.”
A close friend of her son, Charles, remembers her as “The cool mom”, a sentiment shared by many others.
Memorials may be made to the Saint Paul Educational Foundation.
