Dennis R. Merkle

Dennis R. Merkle, 73, of Highland, IL, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in O’Fallon, IL.

He was born on November 29, 1952, in Highland, Illinois, to Richard and Virginia (nee Bohnenstiehl) Merkle. On November 7, 1981, he married Catherine Holland in Jerseyville, IL.

Dennis was a farmer his entire life. As a member of the Highland Sportsman’s Club, he liked to go hunting and fishing and was also a collector of Indian Artifacts. Dennis enjoyed watching sports, especially the Fighting Illini, following all his grandchildren’s activities, and most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Virginia Merkle; his wife Catherine M. (Holland) Merkle; brothers Dale Merkle, and Donald Merkle; sister-in-law Helga Merkle; grandson Vincent Lammers.

Dennis is survived by his daughter, Camille Rakers of Highland; sons, Brett Merkle of Highland, Brandon (Stephanie) Merkle of Highland, and Bradley Merkle of Highland; grandchildren, Trent Rakers, Carly Rakers Gavin Arcynski-Merkle, Tyson Rakers, Gryffin Hofmann, Chloe Merkle, Knox Lammers, Miley Merkle, Hunter Merkle, Miles Merkle, and Mavrick Merkle; sister-in-law, Donna Merkle of Highland; many nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to Highland Quarterback Club, Highland Bulldog Jr. Wrestling Club or Highland Sportsman’s Club.
